Spring hunting season in the Maltese Islands 2026The FKNK will again carry out scientific studies

By now, all Maltese and Gozitan hunters and trappers should be aware that we can still practise traditional hunting and trapping in the Maltese Islands, albeit in limited circumstances, thanks to the Federation for Hunting and Conservation – Malta (FKNK)'s continuous science-informed endeavours, through which the FKNK convinces an understanding government to apply derogations as and when necessary.  Most of these studies and surveys would not be possible without the voluntary participation of FKNK members.

As in the last four spring hunting seasons for turtle doves, the FKNK will conduct a similar survey during the 2026 spring open hunting season to determine the 'sustainability index' of hunted birds.

As the European Commission has also recently turned its attention to the hunting of quail, this year's survey will again be extended to include quail, as well as turtle doves, but will differ from last year's survey.  This year's survey will involve identifying and recording male and female harvested birds.

Those participating in the Turtle Dove "Trapping" Research Project will also be invited to take part in the turtle dove survey.

Therefore, FKNK members are urged to participate by filling out the respective form during the 2026 spring hunting and 'trapping' seasons and returning it to the FKNK at the end of the season.  These forms can be obtained by emailing info@huntinginmalta.org.mt or from several FKNK outlets in Malta and Gozo, as well as the FKNK offices in Msida.

Finally, the FKNK reiterates its appeal for the full participation of its members and wishes them a successful season.
