With reference to the recent article published by Times of Malta titled “EU ‘assessing’ Malta’s response to bird trapping ruling”, which highlights that Environment Commissioner Jessika Roswall is confident that a solution will be found, the Federation for Hunting and Conservation – Malta (FKNK) welcomes this constructive and measured approach.
The FKNK has consistently maintained that meaningful dialogue, grounded in understanding and mutual respect, is essential to achieving a balanced and sustainable solution for Malta, particularly in light of the country’s unique ecological, geographical, and socio-cultural realities.
The FKNK positively notes that Commissioner Roswall met its officials during her recent visit to Malta, where the organisation had the opportunity to present and explain in detail the wide range of conservation initiatives it actively leads and supports. These include projects such as the Barn Owl reintroduction programme, the Turtle Dove conservation initiative, and the development of native tree nurseries, which together clearly demonstrate the direct and tangible contribution of hunters and trappers to biodiversity conservation.
FKNK reiterates its commitment to remain actively engaged in constructive discussions with European institutions and national authorities, with the aim of ensuring that any way forward is science-based and respects Malta’s particular and unique circumstances.
