The Salina Salt Pans Management

The Federation for Hunting and Conservation – Malta (FKNK) congratulates BirdLife Malta on being awarded the Environmental Stewardship Award for Voluntary Organisations at the 2025 ERA (Environment and Resources Authority) Awards for its management of the Salina Salt Pans, which included the Salina Wetland Restoration Project.  The Donors Initiative for Freshwater Ecosystems (DIMFE) contributed an additional €300,000 to BirdLife Malta's funds for this project.

On 21 August 2018, when the then Minister for the Environment handed over the management of the Salina to BirdLife Malta, which respective agreement included an annual government grant of €150,000 to BirdLife Malta for its management, he announced that the FKNK were next in line for a similar land management agreement. 

While BirdLife Malta has received €1,500,000 for managing the Salina, the FKNK is still waiting for its turn.
