FKNK on lead: our position has not changed

The Federation for Hunting and Conservation – Malta (FKNK) rejects Kaċċaturi San Ubertu’s (KSU) allegation that it has changed its position on the prohibition of lead in ammunition. FKNK remains opposed to the ban: welcoming the changes and extension of the transition period to seven years does not mean supporting it.

Concerns about safety, firearm compatibility, the effectiveness and cost of possible  alternatives, animal welfare and ammunition stocks remain valid. FKNK raised them in consultations with the Maltese Government, including dedicated reports, where Malta’s particular and sensitive circumstances were acknowledged.

FKNK also communicated its position to firearms dealers months ago. A meeting with them is being prepared and will take place once the outcome of the European process becomes clearer in the coming days.

FKNK insisted on a market assessment in the seventh year to establish whether suitable, safe, effective and reasonably priced alternatives are available for Malta’s hunting practices and the firearms used. Time alone will not resolve these problems.

After more than 40 years of European representation through FACE, FKNK will not accept its work or FACE’s being undermined through selective interpretations. It is surprised by these allegations, particularly since, to its knowledge, it has seen neither contributions from KSU on this issue in recent years nor its official participation in national and European stakeholder meetings.

FKNK categorically rejects these false and misleading allegations and calls on KSU to publicly withdraw and correct them. Hunters and live-capturers deserve the truth. Seeking attention does not justify distorting facts or damaging the Federation’s reputation. If these allegations are not withdrawn and corrected, FKNK will take the necessary steps through the appropriate channels to defend its name and reputation.
