The first Malta cookbook of its kind, “Game Recipes from Malta”, published by the Federation for Hunting and Conservation – Malta (FKNK) in late 2024, has been shortlisted in the Game category for the 31st Gourmand Awards, Books of 2025, which will be held at the Saudi Feast Food Festival in Riyadh at the end of November 2025.
Founded in 1995 by Edouard Cointreau, the Gourmand Awards are an international competition that honours the best food and wine books, both printed and digital, as well as food television. Often compared to the 'Oscars' for food and wine publishing, the awards celebrate content in all languages and are open to major publishers and self-published authors alike. With numerous categories, the competition promotes food culture and education worldwide, receiving entries from hundreds of countries and regions. The awards ceremony is a major international event that brings together publishers, authors, chefs and journalists.
The specialised, unique cookbook “Game Recipes from Malta” is the first cookbook ever published locally that is entirely dedicated to game cooking in the Maltese Islands.
Dr Noel Buttigieg, Senior Lecturer, Researcher and Coordinator at the University of Malta's Institute for Tourism, Travel & Culture, wrote the foreword to “Game Recipes from Malta”. The preface briefly outlines the history and culture of Maltese game cooking, after which the editors, Lino Farrugia (FKNK CEO) and Lucas Micallef (FKNK President), present a couple of 'unwritten recipes'. These recipes would have been lost and forgotten were it not for the oral tradition of passing them down through demonstration and observation from the elders of hunting families to their children and respective families. Twelve celebrated local chefs then present two exquisite game dishes each.
“Game Recipes from Malta” can be found at leading stationers in Malta and Gozo, as well as at the FKNK Msida offices.
