The Federation for Hunting and Conservation - Malta (FKNK) is pleased to announce that its proposal for the continuation of the Finch Research Programme this autumn on the same basis as last year has been implemented today with the publication of the relevant Legal Notice. This proposal was presented by the FKNK at the last meeting of the Ornis Committee, where the Committee agreed to recommend this proposal to the Honourable Minister Clint Camilleri for his approval.
The research will take place between 20 October 2024 and 20 December 2024, both dates inclusive. The FKNK would like to remind the participating trappers that any bird caught should be reported to the WBRU as soon as possible after capture before being released back into the wild, after it has been checked to see if it has a scientific ring, in which case the details should be noted on the relevant form sent by the WBRU, before release. In addition, finches caught during the research will not be subject to any bag limits. All other conditions and regulations regarding the application of this research derogation are the same as last year.
Trappers should above all appreciate the ongoing work of the FKNK, which, together with the strong political will of Minister Clint Camilleri, the research will continue for the fourth consecutive year, despite two cases in the Court of Europe and the many obstacles that the abolitionists of this socio-cultural tradition of Maltese and Gozitan trappers continue to create. The FKNK therefore augurs well for a good season and encourages all participating member trappers to enjoy the season in accordance with the laws and regulations.
During part of the research period, the FKNK will be conducting a study to gather further scientific details on the captured finches, while foreign qualified bird ringer(s) may come to Malta and be engaged to assist in this study. The study will be carried out on a voluntary basis by a number of trappers who are members of the FKNK. The FKNK is also keen to receive as many videos as possible of the release of finches back into the wild.
